What's The Difference Between A Secretary, A PA And An EA?
There's no official definition but a reasonable explanation would be:
- A secretary may work for more than one boss and will not usually be expected to make decisions on behalf of the organisation.
- A Personal Assistant usually works for one or two bosses and will have much more responsibility for organising and making decisions than a secretary, as well as fulfilling a secretarial role.
- An Executive Assistant will usually work for just one boss and will have input into the organisation's management decisions, often through being tasked with researching matters and preparing reports. They may also retain some secretarial responsibilities.
How Do I Become A Personal Assistant Or Executive Assistant?
If you're coming to this career as a newcomer, the best thing to do is take the Pitman Training diploma level Executive PA course.
Depending on whether you study full time or part time (or even somewhere in between), this qualification will take you 3-12 months to complete and is nationally recognised as proof of your practical ability to really deliver.
The Pitman Training one-Day Executive PA seminar forms a part of the diploma and may be taken on its own if you already have some experience, particularly as a secretary.
If you're really ambitious, you may want to try the 2-year Executive Plus diploma from Pitman Training. This course will give you all the secretarial, accounting and junior management skills you'll need to become an Executive Assistant.
And if you're already working as a senior secretary, a Personal Assistant or and Executive Assistant, you'll love our 2-day seminar entitled "From Good To Outstanding." It will take you to another level as will our 3 seminars by Marguerita King:
- Two-day Executive PA Masterclass
- One-day Event Management For PA's

When people come to us for help here at Pitman Training, one of the main confusions we deal with is over the different roles of secretaries, personal assistants and executive assistants, and how these differ. The main difference between the roles is the level of responsibility. Most people venturing into this field start out as a secretary, often working for a number of bosses, with limited responsibilities when it comes to making decisions on behalf of the company. A Personal Assistant typically has more responsibilities, whilst still carrying out secretarial duties. Those who work their way up to the role of executive assistant, however, can expect to have a significant input into managerial decisions.
How to Become a PA
The best advice we can give for people venturing into this career for the first time, asking how to become a PA, is to take the Pitman Training diploma level Executive PA course. This complete comprehensive programme covers all the main stages and skills involved in how to become a PA, and provide you with a nationally recognised qualification to display on your CV. If, however you already have some experience in the role of a personal assistant and are looking to develop on this, then our one and two day seminars may be more appropriate. We even give you the chance to attend a seminar led by the extremely talented and experienced Adam Fidler, for those who wish to learn first-hand about the experiences and challenges faced by personal and executive assistants.
Aside from these specialist PA courses, we have over one hundred courses to select from which may also help you in how to become a PA, including courses in areas that you may need extra help with such as typing, minute making or specific PC software programmes like Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook.
Once you have acquired your Pitman Training qualification, we are confident you should find yourself well equipped to begin or develop your career plans.
