Differences & Commonalities Between London & Manchester
Office skills education provider Holborn Training is seeing a marked difference in the range of its students’ nationalities between its training centres in London and Manchester even though it offers identical secretarial, bookkeeping and IT courses in both cities.
A March 2011 head count at the company’s Pitman Training Centres in London’s Holborn, Notting Hill and Manchester showed that 71% of students in London were from overseas while only 1% of Manchester students came from abroad.
The company’s staff reflects this pattern with 75% of London-based tutors and administrators coming from overseas while all but 1 Manchester-based staff are local.
Managing Director Keith Wymer comments: “We can’t identify why there is such a disparity between our Northern and Southern centres.
Manchester certainly appears to have as diverse a population as London and our marketing message is explicit that we welcome people from all cultures to study with us, but the difference is marked.”
The student demographic is also different.
In London the majority of students from overseas come from Poland, Lithuania and Russia and have an average age of 28 while in Manchester, 99% of the students are indigenous Brits with ages typically ranging from 18-45.
Wymer again: “We’re working hard to reach out to students from overseas in Manchester. But whether it’s London or Manchester, a common theme is clear. The motivation for training most commonly stated on application forms is ‘I want to better myself.’ Wherever the students come from, their desire to get on is the common theme.”
