If you’re working on career planning and considering bookkeeping courses, you really need to consider what you want to achieve.

Are you looking for an entry level job or something more developmental?

Most people prefer the latter and when they look at bookkeeping courses tend to go for Pitman Training’s Accounting Technician or Foundation In Finance Diplomas as these programmes have a high success rate in helping students embark on a career as a bookkeeper.

Unlike most bookkeeping schools, Pitman Training in London’s High Holborn and Notting Hill and in Manchester have a learning methodology that allows students to start at any time and study at times to suit them.

The organisation believes this is a better learning method than online courses as it offers the same flexibility as online bookkeeping courses but is supported by real trainers who are on hand throughout their long opening hours to give tutorials and help.

Apart from the time flexibility, the Pitman Training method means students can practice their skills until they are fluent before applying for jobs and this in turn enables them to study to a higher degree than traditional bookkeeping certification programmes.

But how do they justify the assertion that online bookkeeping courses are less effective than those providing trainer support?

Shilpa Wymer, Principal of the Pitman Training centres in Notting Hill and High Holborn and Manchester claims, “There is no secret that online bookkeeping courses have a very low completion rate while our versions of the same programmes have a completion rate in the high 90%’s. That is obviously as a result of the high motivation factor of having a live tutor to look after you.”

“In addition, if you’re looking to become a certified bookkeeper, you could do worse than having Pitman Training on your CV, as we are one of the world’s longest established office skills training providers.”

But couldn’t this longevity also mean that their approach is out of date?

“Not a bit of it,” says Mrs Wymer. “Bookkeeping and the whole accounting business is based on basic principles such as double entry and it is the quality of the training that makes the difference.”

Individuals who choose to learn bookkeeping are recommended to take classes in Sage Line 50, payroll and Microsoft Excel as a minimum to ensure they are covering all the financial aspects of business administration.

Pitman Training’s Shilpa Wymer goes further, adding that “students are best advised to start off with learning manual bookkeeping skills as a foundation for computerised accounting and to study under the supervision of a certified instructor, which is less likely to be the case with online bookkeeping courses.”

Logic suggests this is a sensible way forward as such basic knowledge will help a potential bookkeeper to find and keep a high quality, professional job.

After all, when you’re handling your employer’s money, you want to make sure you know what you’re doing!

A Sure-Footed
Way Of Learning Bookkeeping Skills.

At Pitman Training in London (Notting Hill and High Holborn), and Manchester, we favour building a strong foundation to becoming a bookkeeper.

While many people ask us about learning how to use Sage Line 50, we feel it’s more meaningful to learn how to carry out manual accounting functions first en route to the computerised Sage software approach.

Our rationale is that if you want to become a professional bookkeeper, you need to understand the concepts that underpin the various processes required by management.

That’s why we offer a whole range of manual bookkeeping courses in addition to Sage Line 50, Sage Payroll and advanced Excel, as well as Company Law.
