Becoming a Legal Secretary

Being a legal secretary is one of the most rewarding secretarial positions available. When you become a legal secretary, you will be integral to the everyday running of a law firm, scheduling appointments, managing phone calls and emails, preparing court papers and filing documents. Becoming a legal secretary requires come specific knowledge, and there are various steps you should take if you wish to pursue it as a career.

Although having a degree is not a prerequisite to becoming a legal secretary, it is advisable that potential legal secretaries undertake some form of training. Even if you have taken an executive PA course, it can be beneficial to take some legal secretary training to enable you to understand the intricacies of the business.

Much of a legal secretary’s role is involves working on a computer. Potential legal secretaries should make sure that they are well acquainted with the latest word processing, database and spread sheet packages. Legal secretaries should also be able to type quickly, with touch typing being a desirable skill.

Legal secretaries should be familiar with legal documents and terminology. While they may seem complicated at first, they are thoroughly taught on legal secretarial courses. Potential legal secretaries should also have excellent interpersonal skills, as much of their days will be spent liaising with lawyers and clients. As well as undertaking legal secretary training, taking a temporary job in a secretary’s office can help to expand your skills and make you more desirable for a permanent position.
