The Truth About Studying To Become A Bookkeeper By Rachna Shah, Holborn Training Ltd.

Quite often, people come to our Pitman Training centres in London’s Notting Hill and Holborn, or to our lovely new one in Manchester, and ask “What is the minimum number of bookkeeping courses I realistically need to get a job as a bookkeeper?”

Most people are hoping I’ll say just our Basic Bookkeeping course or our slightly longer Bookkeeping For Beginners programme but I have to tell them the truth, which is that although these two  subjects are great stepping stones, they don’t take you far enough to get into a bookkeeping job.

I usually try to explain that there are 3 realistic study routes to get you into work. You might call these the gold, silver and bronze routes!

My experience of being a Course Advisor over the years taught me that the best route was the Pitman Training Accounting Technican diploma, followed by the Foundation In Bookkeeping diploma and then a selection of single subjects.

I tend to map these out for potential students on paper so that they can make the right choice based on their ambition and their budget:

Best For Jobs – Gold

Second Best For Jobs – Silver

Minimum For Jobs – Bronze

Obviously you have to take into account whether a student can afford to pay for a bookkeeping course but I always encourage students to aim as high as they can, to enable them to get a job and recover their investment in their training as soon as they can.

I have seen at first hand, time and again that those who make the biggest commitment to their careers in terms of time and money get the best jobs.
